Rocks of ages

چکیده

There is an intangible quality of implausibility to Australia that is impossible to put into words. It has an ancient and fragile feel: it is almost a continental equivalent of a tree sprouting out of a seemingly solid rock; precarious and beautiful and not quite sustainable. It is a continent where the unexpected is usual, and yet it is always surprising and thrilling when the unexpected is found, never more so than on the occasion of the recent rediscovery of one of the most significant rock art sites in Australia. The site in Arnhem Land was originally discovered in the 1970s by rock art expert George Chaloupka but the location was then lost until a doctoral student, Daryl Guse, from the Australian National University in Canberra, working with the local indigenous elder Ronald Lamilami, found it again a few months ago. Now a team of researchers, Western Australia, have been over the area and have discovered at Features least 100 previously undocumented walls of rock art, in addition to the one documented by Chaloupka 30 years ago. The oldest Australian rock art is as old as its European counterparts, with some possibly dating as far back as 40,000 years, but, while the art A series of rock paintings in Arnhem Land reveal one of the longest records of human illustration and surprises about native Australian history. Hannah Robertson reports. Older: A depiction of the Tasmanian tiger, now extinct in Australia. Newer: Trading ships reveal long-standing links between native Australians and outsiders.

Timing of tectonic events in the Alpujárride Complex, Betic Cordillera, southern Spain

Ar–Ar and fission-track dating from four low-grade sections in the Alpujárride Complex sheds light on the timing of the early contractional history of these high-pressure metamorphic units, and their subsequent exhumation during the early Miocene extensional collapse of the Betic orogen. White mica grains from the lowest-grade rocks yield partly reset detrital Ar–Ar ages; where deformation and ...

Potassium-argon ages from the galapagos islands.

Potassium-argon ages of eight volcanic rocks from some of the geologically oldest flows exposed in the Galápagos Archipelago indicate that the Galápagos Islands have a probable maximum age of 3 million years. Rocks from six islands were dated; the oldest are from Española (3.2 +/- 0.2), Sante Fe (2.7 +/- 0.1), and Plazas (4.2 +/- 1.8 million years). The new data suggest that the Galápagos Islan...

Precise 40Ar–39Ar ages from the metamorphic sole rocks of the Tauride Belt Ophiolites, southern Turkey: implications for the rapid cooling history

The Tauride Belt Ophiolites in southern Turkey are located on both sides of the E–Wtrending, Mesozoic Tauride carbonate platform. They comprise the Lycian, Antalya, Beyşehir, Mersin, Alihoca and Pozantı-Karsantı ophiolites from west to east. Each ophiolite has a metamorphic rock unit either at the base of the peridotites or in the mélange units. The metamorphic sole rocks generally consist of a...

U/Pb and Pb/Pb zircon ages from granitoid rocks of Wallagga area: constraints on magmatic and tectonic evolution of Precambrian rocks of western Ethiopia

The Precambrian rocks in western Ethiopia consist of highand low-grade terranes intruded by granitoids with a wide compositional spectrum. The formation ages of these granitoid rocks are, so far, poorly understood. Single-grain zircon Pb/Pb evaporation and conventional U/Pb dating conducted on four granitoids places time constraints on their emplacement and tectonothermal events. Three granitoi...

Dating of Precambrian Metasedimentary Rocks and Timing of their Metamorphism in the Soursat Metamorphic Complex (NW IRAN): Using LA–ICP-MS, U–Pb Dating of Zircon and Monazite

Soursat Metamorphic Complex (SMC) in west of Takab city is one of the polyphase metamorphic terrenes in northern Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic belt of Iran. The SMC composed mainly of metasedimentary rocks associated with granitic intrusions. Based on metamorphic rocks, two metamorphic phases could be separate in the complex. M1 is representative of regional metamorphisms which varies from greens...
